The Golden Period of Learning: SHICHIDA at Home’s Approach to Soul Education

At SHICHIDA at Home, we lay a strong foundation for learning during the Golden Period. The Golden period is a critical phase when children learn at their fastest and easiest. We utilize the SHICHIDA Method in our videos and learning materials, an approach to early education that balances age-specific activities aimed at maximizing every child’s cognitive, physical, and social potential.

The SHICHIDA Method: Whole Brain Training

The SHICHIDA Method emphasizes whole brain training. This is a unique approach that engages both the right and left hemispheres of the brain. This method harnesses the full potential of the brain by stimulating areas responsible for creativity, intuition, and visualization (right brain) as well as logical reasoning, language, and analytical thinking (left brain).

Benefits of Whole Brain Training:

  • Enhanced Creativity and Imagination: By stimulating the right brain, we help children develop stronger creative thinking and visualization skills, which are crucial for problem-solving and innovation.
  • Improved Memory and Concentration: Techniques such as memory games and visualization exercises enhance a child’s ability to retain and recall information, leading to better academic performance.
  • Balanced Development: Engaging both hemispheres ensures that children develop a well-rounded skill set, balancing analytical skills with emotional intelligence.
  • Stronger Intuition and Empathy: Right brain activities promote emotional awareness and empathy, helping children understand and relate to others better.
  • Boosted Confidence and Self-Esteem: Whole brain training helps children achieve milestones and overcome challenges, building their confidence and encouraging a positive attitude towards learning.

Our History

The SHICHIDA Method was founded by Professor Makoto Shichida, who began his career as an English teacher in Gotsu, Japan. His observations of the rapid learning abilities of young children led him to dedicate 20 years to researching early childhood brain development. Established in 1958, the SHICHIDA Method is the original whole-brain teaching method, designed to draw out the innate abilities of all children. The first SHICHIDA Early Learning Centre opened in 1976, and its popularity has grown worldwide. In 2017, SHICHIDA at Home, the world’s first online early learning program, was launched in Australia and New Zealand.

The Golden Period

Our unique early learning program is based on over 60 years of scientific research and is designed to foster brain development through fun and engaging activities.

According to prior scientific research, the period from birth to four years is called the “Golden Period.” This period is very important for child development, as it establishes genius-like abilities during the early years.

SHICHIDA at Home nurtures these abilities using research-based teaching methods, such as flashcards, critical thinking activities, memory-based activities, fine motor skills practice, and more.

Soul Education

Soul Education is a fundamental aspect of the SHICHIDA Method, reflecting our belief that true learning goes beyond academic achievement to encompass emotional growth and well-being. It emphasizes the development of the whole child, nurturing their inner qualities and values.

Learning Through Play:

A key element of Soul Education is ‘learning through play,’ which is central to quality early childhood education. Play is a natural and enjoyable way for children to explore the world around them, fostering curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving skills. Through play, children learn to interact with others, develop empathy, and build social skills, all of which are crucial for their overall development.

Engaging the Heart and Mind:

We believe that when we engage the hearts of children, we can engage their minds more effectively. Activities that evoke joy, wonder, and excitement make learning more meaningful and memorable. By creating a positive and supportive learning environment, children are more likely to develop a love for learning and the confidence to explore new concepts.

Building Confidence and Life Skills:

Soul Education focuses on promoting confidence and life skills that children will carry with them beyond the classroom. This includes encouraging resilience, independence, and a growth mindset. By celebrating small achievements and providing constructive feedback, we help children build self-esteem and the ability to persevere through challenges.

Strengthening the Parent-Child Bond:

SHICHIDA at Home is designed to strengthen the inherent bond between parent and child. As parents engage in learning activities with their children, they not only support their academic growth but also nurture their emotional well-being. This shared learning experience builds trust and deepens the parent-child relationship, empowering parents to be their child’s first and best teacher.

Nurturing Emotional Intelligence:

Soul Education involves nurturing emotional intelligence, which includes the ability to recognize, understand, and manage one’s own emotions as well as the emotions of others. By modelling and reinforcing positive behaviours, we help children develop empathy, emotional regulation, and the ability to form healthy relationships with others.

Order of Acquisition

Understanding the natural order in which children gain intellectual abilities is fundamental to our approach. Our videos are designed using a layering method to accommodate this order, beginning with basic recognition skills and progressing to more complex associations and classifications.

  • Recognition: Firstly, we begin with basic recognition skills, such as identifying individual objects (e.g., recognizing a cat).
  • Association: Secondly, we move to association, where children understand that different representations (real, picture, word) refer to the same object.
  • Classification: Thereafter, we introduce classification, where children learn to group objects and identify non-members of a group.
  • Combining Factors: Following this, we focus on combining factors, enabling children to recognize combinations of attributes (e.g., a large circle).
  • Complex Recognition: Finally, we progress to complex recognition, where children judge and recognize multiple factors simultaneously.
